John 15:9-13 New American Standard Bible
9“Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in my love. 10“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11“These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. 12“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
We often forget that true love produces intense desire to please those to whom it is directed. Jesus came to illustrate both the fathers love for Him and His love for the Father. He tells us that we can see his love for the father by his desire to obey his directives.
God is the source of all real love.
God is all-powerful and absolute in his holiness. The scriptures declare simply: “God is Love.” Since He is the ultimate expression of love, His commandments are given to us in His love. What He requires of us is both right and just. His commandments are always given for best interest, not His.
Obedience to His will is the ultimate expression of our love for Him.
Praise and prayer uttered in great volumes of verbal expression are empty and void of meaning if we walk in disobedience to His Commandments. Though we are directed to give Him audible praise, It pales in its effectiveness, compared to the heart that longs to walk in his upright statutes.
We must love him with audible expression and absolute obedience. Look to the example of our Lord and Redeemer who obeyed The Heavenly Fathers commandments perfectly. We can abide in His love, and express it perfectly, by living in obedience to His commandments. By His Spirit we are enabled to love Him who first loved us.
Our joy and happiness can be experienced only when we abide in Him and we allow Him to abide in us. Jesus set the example. Let us learn of Him.
