Thought for the Day # 206

THE UNCHANGEABLE LORD

Deuteronomy 4:31   (New American Standard Bible)

31“For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

Malachi 3:6

6“For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Surely, the House of Israel is saturated with ungodly sin. We look at our nation and its great fall from righteousness.  Immorality is abundant. Transgression of God’s Covenant is constant. Spiritual iniquity and irreverence is rampant. The fear of a Holy God seems nonexistent.   Integrity has disappeared. Degradation abounds.

The righteous are grieved, the faithful are losing hope, the weak and feeble abide in despair. What an awful picture of today’s society. It is easy to find ourselves gripped in fearful doubt and unbelief. But, wait, God has made a covenant with his people!

The Old Testament people of Israel were in the same situation as we are today. They had sinned and broken the covenant of God. Their disobedience brought captivity upon them. They, too, deserved judgment and retribution from the hand of Almighty God.

But God does not change!  He had committed himself to righteous Abraham, making covenant with him that he would become the father of many nations. He declared that Abraham’s seed would be his chosen people. God committed himself to preserve and keep a remnant. He would not allow all of Israel to be destroyed.

The Lord God is a compassionate God. Because of his commitment to our fathers he has declared that he will not fail us. He will not destroy us. But, rather, he will preserve us and deliver us when we turn to him in true repentance.

We serve an unchangeable God. He keeps his covenants even though we break them. He is compassionate and anxious to forgive. Let us turn from our wicked ways and be restored in his righteousness. It is time for the House of Israel to walk uprightly before our holy God.

Surely we are not already consumed because we serve a God who does not change!

Prayer:

Oh Lord, my God, cleanse me from my sin. Forgive my transgressions and restore me into your fellowship. I want to be acceptable unto you. Soften my hardened heart and mold me into your image. I know that I am not consumed or destroyed though I deserve to be. Thank you for being an unchangeable God who is faithful and true. Cleanse me oh God, and renew a right spirit within me, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, my Redeemer. Amen
