Thought for the Day #254

Hebrews 13:17     (New American Standard Bible)

17Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

Our very nature rebels against authority.

While there is much that could be said, both pro and con, about the benefits and pitfalls of civil government, it is not the purpose of this writing.

We, the children of God, have fallen into the trap of rebellion and disobedience to those sent for our benefit. It is easy for us to look at the spiritual leaders given to us by God, and find fault or look upon them with indifference.

Beware! Such a practice will lead to destruction. Certainly, no man is perfect.  All of us, regardless of our place in the Kingdom, experience shortcomings and failure.  But, God chooses such men to minister to his sons and daughters.

We are commanded to submit ourselves to those who serve us with joy. We must remember that they are the gift of God. They are sent to watch over our souls, to prepare us for His Kingdom, perfecting us in our relationship with him.

Lack of respect for those in authority over us is very unprofitable. God's word makes it very clear.  We are to submit to those whom he has placed in spiritual authority over us.  Let us be reminded that, like us, they walk in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, sometimes, at great personal cost.

Greater spiritual victory, as well as tangible provision, comes to those who yield themselves to the commandments of God. He has commanded us to submit ourselves, giving respect and honor to those who watch over our souls.

Dear heavenly Father, I come to you with penitent spirit. I have been caught up with the worldly attitude of rebellion and disrespect.  Please forgive me.  Help me to remember those ministering to me have my best interest at heart.  Help me to accept strong instruction with humility that I might be profited by their ministry.  I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
