Thought for the day #278
THE PRICE OF PRIDE
1 Corinthians 10:11-12†††††† (New American Standard Bible)
11Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
12Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
One of the Christianís greatest pitfalls is pride. Those who are filled with it are rarely aware of its presence. Too often, they discover it at tremendous cost.
It is easy to become overjoyed with the blessings of our new life through Jesus Christ.
The scriptures were written that we might have an example of how to live within the statutes of God. He wants us to walk in assurance and confidence within his kingdom.
Certainly, God expects us to fully appreciate our relationship with him. But, there is a fine line between confidence and pride. Our human nature lends itself to arrogant ego and self-glorification.
We must always remember that any good thing within, is because of His righteousness and not our own.
†Sometimes we become overconfident, believing that we are so righteous that we would never fall into temptation or sin. We present ourselves as being better than someone else.
Our ego begins to express itself in arrogant self-righteousness. This gives rise to an attitude of overconfidence and self sufficiency. We begin to believe that we cannot fall.
The Bible gives ample example of those who have forsaken humility and assumed arrogance. Their pride brought swift destruction.
We must remember that our righteousness is not our own. It is a blessed gift, extended through the cleansing blood of our precious Savior, Jesus Christ. Let our confidence be in Him rather than the carnal ego of our flesh.
Dear Heavenly Father, I realize that I sometimes exhibit a haughty spirit. †I forget the bondage of sin, from which I was delivered. Please forgive me. I realize that there is no righteousness in me except that, which is in Christ Jesus, my Lord. Help me to have a meek and humble Spirit. I want to live in your ability and not my own. Please warn me if I start to become puffed up in sinful pride.† †I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
