Thought for the Day #328

1 John 4:1-5 (New American Standard Bible)

4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; and this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

False prophets are everywhere. Some boldly teach falsehoods and distortions that are never supported by the scriptures. Others are very deceptive. They disguise themselves as devout men (or women) of God.

They go about in the pretense of dedicated service to the Lord, carefully leavening their activity with twisted distortions. The things they speak sound good, even reasonable. But, they actually undermine the truth of the scriptures and the faith of believers. They sow seeds of deceit, discord and division in God's kingdom.

Beware of those who do such things. They are careful not to declare Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of God. They will never discuss his death and resurrection, or his atoning sacrifice for our sin. In fact, their speech rarely mentions the name of Jesus or acknowledges that he came in the flesh.

Beware of such creatures. They generally have a spirit of religiosity, presenting themselves as pure and holy messengers of God, but always denying the truth of his Word and the power of his Spirit.

Do not fear! Those who have been born into the kingdom of God according to Acts 2:38, are filled with the Spirit of truth. The Holy Spirit will give you understanding as you read his Word. He will expose the deceitful message of the imposter.

Read the Scripture daily. Meditate upon it. Let the Holy Spirit develop your under-standing. You will never be deceived if you know what the word of God says.

Heavenly Father, I sometimes find it difficult to discern between those who are really Christian teachers and those who are not. Keep me from being deceived.

I promise to read my Bible regularly, but I need the Holy Spirit's help to understand it. I want to grow deeper in my spiritual experience and relationship with you. I pray in Jesusí name. Amen.
